Top Benefits of PDO Threads

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, there were nearly 6,000 facelifts performed on people under the age of 54 last year in the United States.

Although they are popular procedures, the long recovery time required for traditional facelifts can be impractical for many. That is why PDO threads have increasingly become the go-to procedure to tighten skin and reduce signs of aging.

At Spa in the City, we offer PDO threads for those who want a minimally invasive option that delivers quality results. Learn more about this treatment to see if it is right for you.

What Are PDO Threads?

Polydioxanone (PDO) threads are sutures made of a biodegradable polymer. A PDO thread treatment involves using these dissolvable sutures to tighten your skin. PDO threads can help rejuvenate your skin by triggering your body’s natural healing response.

Of all of the types of sutures used in thread procedures, PDO threads have been around the longest. Your body responds to these threads in your skin by triggering cells that produce more collagen.

Collagen is the protein that keeps your skin looking firm and hydrated, giving it the elasticity it needs. Because loss of collagen is one of the main causes of wrinkles, sagging, and fine lines, PDO threads get right to the root of the problem.

At our center, we use mono threads, which are smooth PDO threads that can treat many areas, including the following:

  • Upper and lower cheeks
  • Marionette lines
  • Forehead and brow
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Neck
  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Abdomen

The threads physically smooth out the skin in the treated areas, providing immediate results while continuing the rejuvenating process by triggering collagen production. Blood and growth factors rush to the area, creating younger-looking and healthier skin.

PDO threads can also help reduce facial roundness, helping people regain their face’s natural V-shape.

Optimal candidates for mono threads are people 30 years old and older who have mild to moderate sagging skin and who do not want to undergo surgical procedures like a traditional facelift.

The right candidates are in overall good health. If you have acne, skin infections, broken skin, or cold sores, we may postpone treatment.

Mono Thread Benefits

Mono threads offer an immediate improvement with a minimally invasive technique. We insert the threads into the surface layer of your skin, where they will be gradually absorbed. Even after the absorption, collagen production continues, offering long-lasting results.

We can customize all treatments because PDO threads are available in all sizes. Thinner threads can offer the best results for areas like the cheeks, upper or lower lips and chin , while we can use thicker threads for your neck..

Since the procedure is minimally invasive, there is no downtime.

Prepping for PDO Threads

At your consultation, we will assess the areas to treat while also getting your full medical history. If you have had cosmetic procedures of any kind in the past, let us know. Make sure to also tell us of any medications you take.

To prepare for PDO threads, we ask that you stop taking blood-thinning medications like aspirin and ibuprofen, as well as supplements like omega-3, for at least two days before your treatment. The night before your appointment, avoid alcohol consumption.

We’ll also ask you to stay out of the sun for at least a couple of days before treatment to avoid added skin sensitivity. If you smoke, stop at least five days before your appointment.

The Procedure and Recovery Process

On the day of your appointment, we will walk you through the entire process before disinfecting the areas we will treat. We will apply a local anesthetic if needed, but usually ice is sufficiant and then begin inserting the threads. The entire process can take up to 45 minutes.

Immediately after the procedure, you can go home.

The results of a PDO thread lift are immediate and will continue to improve with time. Most people enjoy the results for up to a year. To extend the effects of PDO threads, you want to avoid high levels of alcohol consumption. Alcohol reduces the flow of blood to the skin and dehydrates it.

You should also stop smoking. Nicotine dehydrates the skin, as well, making it look older and giving it more of a crepey appearance.

Remember to always apply sunscreen, even if the day is cloudy. UV rays break down collagen, undoing all of the benefits that mono threads offer.
