Restore Your Youth With Treatment for Age Spots
As one gets older, unsightly blemishes can form on the back of the hands or the face. Called lentigines, the common name is age spots or liver spots. They occur when a place on the surface of the skin enlarges with more pigment and forms what looks like a big freckle. It may be one spot or several bunched together.
Age spots can develop even in childhood but are much more common in older people, particularly those who have spent a lot of time in the sun. Some people also have a hereditary tendency for age spots.
If you want to reduce the appearance or remove age spots, there are treatments available that may remove them or make them lighter. Some of those treatments include:
- Laser and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy — Laser and intense pulsed light treatments work by destroying the cells that produce melanin without causing any damage to the surface of the skin. After finishing the treatment, the age spots gradually fade after a month or two. There are few side effects, but there may be some slight discoloration of the skin. After the therapy, you will need to protect yourself from the sun by using sunblock.
- Chemical peels — With a chemical peel, an acid is gently applied to the surface of the skin that removes several superficial layers. As the skin peels away, the growth of collagen is stimulated and new skin forms. A number of treatments will be needed before you get the results you want. Depending on the treatment area and the effects desired, there are different strengths that can be performed on the patient.
- Microdermabrasion — This treatment is not as aggressive as dermabrasion but removes mild skin blemishes and creates smoother skin. To get the full effect of this treatment, it will take several months of procedures. If you have tiny red veins on your face or rosacea, this treatment is not recommended.
