Celebrities and socialites all over the world are video blogging and posting about their latest beauty treatments. Many of the most popular are laser treatments, chemical peels and facials. Kim Kardashian is famous for posting her beauty adventures, and we want our patients at Spa in the City to experience the same treatment and results. They say pain is beauty, but our treatments try to minimize any sensations of discomfort at every step, so you get the beauty results you want without painful recovery. At Spa in the City, you’re our favorite A-lister so here are a few things you should know about chemical peels.
What are chemical peels?
Chemical peels are a nonsurgical, non-invasive resurfacing peel method that produces quick, sure results for softer, younger looking skin. Chemical peels can help soften a roughly textured surface, improve dull skin and add moisture to dry cells. These peels can counteract sun-damaged skin and any pre-cancerous cells it may contain. While the result is similar to microdermabrasion, chemical peels are used for more intense situations where microdermabrasion may not be up to the task. For people at high risk, a light chemical peel twice a year is the best way to keep skin cancer at bay. It is also helpful for individuals with facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation. Every skin type can benefit from our chemical peels.
How do chemical peels work?
All chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to the skin which, after a day or so, begins to peel off. This process is used on the face, but also on the neck, chest, and hands if needed. Varying strengths of the solutions are applied to determine whether you will have light or medium peeling. After the skin loosens and falls away, the new skin is allowed to appear from beneath. You will see a dramatic difference in skin color, texture, and tone. The skin feels softer, smoother and has a healthy glow to it.
How can a peel make me look younger?
Chemical peels are especially effective in erasing fine lines under the eyes and around the mouth, for smoothing areas of rough skin and eliminating small scars. A chemical peel can also create a more even skin tone by lightening freckles, sun and age spots, or even blotchy skin caused by certain medications, such as birth control pills. However, it is important to understand peels cannot remove deep scars, tighten sagging skin, reduce large pore size or eliminate tiny broken blood vessels on the face or nose. We can, however, recommend a few different therapies to help you with these issues as well.
What will the treatment consist of?
On the day of treatment, a resurfacing chemical agent will be applied to your skin. The type of chemical agent used is selected based on your skin type, the expected results of treatment, and the amount of time your schedule allows for healing.
Our most popular peel is applied after a thorough cleansing of the skin. You will feel no discomfort, and there is no redness following the application. You will feel comfortable enough to return to your normal activities right away, including going back to work. Total time in the office for this procedure is less than 30-minutes.
During the short recovery time, you will begin to peel lightly for a couple of days. Be sure to protect the treated area from the sun by staying indoors or by using a broad-spectrum sunscreen. After one week, the skin will look clearer, brighter, smoother and younger. We have several types of chemical peels available, and after assessing your skin and goals, our team will find the peel that is right for you.
Are there any side effects?
Chemical peel procedures have few side effects other than the expected peeling and a minimal risk of complication. However, in less than two percent of those who have had peels, complications can include temporary or permanent changes in the color of your skin or reactivation of cold sores (fever blisters or herpes simplex infection). If there are concerns about the risk, a small area can be tested before the treatment. Also, medication can be prescribed to prevent cold sores.
