For as long as many of our patients can remember, hair removal has been a (tedious) part of their lives. According to polls taken by the Huffington Post, men and women alike spend a total of three full days a year shaving unwanted hair. Most people don’t like to spend time shaving, plucking, or waxing, but they have to if they want to present the most aesthetically pleasing appearance.
We know you don’t want to spend hours and days each year fussing over unwanted hair and trying to catch each stray hair in the process. So how do we take care of unwanted hair, reduce the time it takes to get rid of it, and the sometimes mental and physical pain it all causes? At Spa in the City, our clients know that it’s time to start thinking about laser hair removal treatments that will finally get rid of the hair forever. It’s time to say goodbye to dark, coarse hair for good with a comfortable, noninvasive and nonsurgical hair removal treatment thanks to the GentleLASE Pro by Candela.
Your Laser Hair Removal Consultation
Before we consider any laser hair removal treatments at Spa in the City, our technicians will discuss skin type and expectations with you, so you know how many treatments to plan for and if this treatment will work for you. This particular treatment method works best on lighter skin types (from fair to olive tones), and skin that isn’t tanned. During your consultation at Spa in the City, we will look at the areas you wish to be treated and let you know how many treatments it will take to see a reduction of 80 percent or more hair growth. We also may ask that you participate in a spot test to see how your skin reacts to the laser treatment, since some with sensitive skin may have a reaction to the laser. If everything looks good, we can go ahead and schedule your treatment sessions to get things started.
It’s important that you understand that before you begin any laser hair removal treatment, you should not pluck or wax the hair to allow for the hair to continue to grow, making it easier for the GentleLASE laser to target it during these sessions. The laser can damage only the hair that’s in an active growth phase, which will be shaved right before your session; we prefer hair to be shaved a day before the laser hair removal treatment so the tech can have full access to the pattern of hair growth you want to be completely cleared from your skin.
The following areas can be treated with the GentleLASE Pro:
- Under the chin
How does laser hair removal with GentleLASE work?
During a laser hair removal session, we usually don’t use anesthetic, but you can request that a topical anesthetic cream be used on your skin about half an hour before the session. Most of our patients feel comfortable during the treatment, and say it’s comparable to a rubber band snapping on the skin very gently. After all, we chose this treatment for its reputation as a gentle, virtually painless procedure, so that you could be as comfortable as possible during treatment. Laser hair removal wasn’t as painful as you think it is.
The GentleLASE Pro is a handheld device with a fitted tip that dictates the size of the treatment area, which is from the smallest space (like the upper lip at 12mm) to the largest space (the back, at 18mm).
The tool is calibrated to treat areas of thinner skin, skin that covers a bony area, and the spot size needed. The tech will sometimes mark the areas you want to be treated with a white pencil; then they will take the handheld laser device and begin treating each space with the 755nm laser tip. As the laser is delivered to the skin, the tech will move the device in a swift motion from side to side, only treating one area at a time. As the laser penetrates the skin, there’s nothing to worry about because no tissues are damaged in the process.
This particular laser is designed to heat only the hair shaft and bulb that allow the hair to maintain growth over time. When the laser moves through the skin, it adheres to the pigmented hair shaft and courses through the hair follicle until the heat has damaged every part of the hair network, so it’s unable to grow back. While this heat energy absorbs into your coarse hair, you will feel a light cooling as the machine sends cold air to the treatment areas to soothe where the laser penetrated.
As soon as you’re done with laser hair treatment here at Spa in the City, we will recommend a few different types of sunscreen you need to wear as soon as you’re ready to go outside and expose the treated area. Our preference is anything above 30 SPF, but you may use something higher if you wish. You’ll need to wear the sunscreen for at least two weeks following the procedure and minimize your sun exposure during this time. The treatment itself will take five minutes to an hour, depending on what areas you treat in each session, but over the next few months, you will notice that the hair will gradually stop growing.
Again, the number of treatment sessions each person needs will differ, but we will let you know, and you can plan accordingly.
