Two of the newest additions to the dermal filler line come from the Restylane family. These products, which are offered at Spa in the City, give patients another option for reversing signs of aging and rejuvenating your appearance. Refyne and Defyne are hyaluronic acid fillers designed to work on some of the most troubling signs of aging, lines that form around the nose and mouth. Both formulations provide superior results without compromising your ability to make natural facial expressions.
How Dermal Fillers Work
Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that provide a host of potential benefits. These formulations work in the underlying dermal layers to restore support that has been lost as a result of collagen depletion. The dermal filler fills in the gaps in the skin’s structure to smooth away wrinkles and add youthful fullness to nearly any area of the face.
Dermal fillers are relatively quick, comfortable treatments that produce nearly immediate results. While the results can be very positive, are only temporary, and the procedure must be repeated periodically to maintain your youthful appearance.
The Restylane Family
Refyne and Defyne are new members of the Restylane line of dermal fillers, a collection of hyaluronic acid fillers designed for a variety of purposes. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar naturally found in the body that contributes to the skin’s hydration and soft, supple appearance. Hyaluronic acid levels diminish over time, leaving skin dry and leading to some of the signs of aging. By restoring hyaluronic acid in the skin, these fillers can reverse those aging symptoms and restore a fresh, smooth look to your complexion.
Refyne and Defyne feature the innovative XpresHAn Technology in their mix. XpresHAn Technology creates gels that provide a wider range of support and flexibility in the skin’s structure, which boasts a couple of different advantages over other fillers. First, these formulations offer a very natural result while preserving your ability to make facial expressions freely. Second, the fillers offer longer results than other Restylane products, with most patients enjoying their rejuvenated look for up to 12 months.
Restylane Refyne for Mild to Moderate Wrinkles
Restylane Refyne is a next-generation hyaluronic acid filler that works primarily on the following aging concerns:
Nasolabial folds – creases that extend from the nose to the outer corners of the mouth
Smile lines – small, vertical wrinkles that form in the outer corners of the mouth
Marionette lines – Creases that begin at the mouth and extend down to the jawline
Lips- Volume loss due to aging
This formulation is less firm, which makes it a good choice for smoothing away mild to moderate facial lines. The gel moves through the skin’s inner structure in a similar fashion to memory foam, allowing you to move your face naturally to make different expressions.
Restylane Defyne for Deeper Creases
Restylane Defyne has a very similar formulation to Refyne, but the firmer texture of the filler makes this product a better choice for moderate to severe signs of aging. Treatment areas are similar to Refyne and include lines and creases around the nose and mouth where the face experiences frequent movement.
Despite its ability to work on even deeper wrinkles, this product produces some of the most natural results seen with any dermal filler treatment today.
Restylane Lyft to Lift Your Cheeks
Restylane Lyft has been FDA-approved to add volume to the cheeks, filling in lines and wrinkles. By filling in these smile lines, your skin appears smoother and provides you with a more youthful appearance. Give your cheeks a lift with this member of the Restylane family.
What to Expect during Your Treatment
No matter which one of these dermal fillers you select, you can rest assured your procedure takes less just around 15 minutes to complete, and it will be relatively comfortable. Injections are made using a fine needle and placed at strategic locations in the treatment area to produce a balanced, natural appearance. Anesthesia is not needed for this treatment, and most of our patients tolerate the procedure well even without a topical numbing cream.
What Happens after Your Treatment
You will be able to head back to your daily activities as soon as your injections are completed. Occasionally patients will experience some mild bruising or swelling around the injection sites, which subsides within a few hours in most cases. There is minimal discomfort after treatment and rarely do our patients ever feel like they need to take time off after the procedure.
You will be able to see results immediately following the procedure. In most cases, patients will enjoy their positive outcome for up to 12 months before requiring a touch-up procedure. These formulations tend to last longer than other Restylane treatments, which typically work for 6-8 months.
What is JUVÉDERM Injectable Gel?
As we age, our skin changes. Over time, the natural volume of youthful skin begins to diminish as wrinkles and folds form. But, with Juvéderm injectable gel, you don’t have to just sit back and let it happen!
Is Juvederm FDA approved?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved Juvederm for the treatment of facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, the lines between the nose and mouth. Two formulations of Juvéderm were approved by the FDA, Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus, allowing for greater customization and flexibility in the treatment of each patient.
How does Juvéderm work?
The ability of cells to produce hyaluronic acid diminishes with age, resulting in the formation of wrinkles and folds as the skin loses volume. Juvéderm gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts to replace lost volume, lifting up and smoothing out unwanted wrinkles.
Is an allergy test required?
No pre-test is needed. Juvéderm is a natural, biodegradable substance of non-animal origin.
Which areas of the face can be treated with Juvéderm?
Juvéderm can be used for smoothing out folds and wrinkles, lip enhancements and shaping facial contours. The most common areas are the nasolabial folds (from the root of the nose to the angle of the mouth), marionette lines, and lips.
What can I expect after the Juvéderm treatment?
Immediately after the treatment, you can expect slight redness, swelling, tenderness or an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the Juvéderm injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. After a lip treatment, the lips may become swollen and look somewhat uneven. This can persist for a few days (up to one week).
What precautions will I need to take after my treatment with Juvéderm?
During the first 48 hours after your Juvéderm treatment, do not massage or rub the treated area. If you have had a lip enhancement, avoid puckering your lips for the first two days after the treatment. Until the initial swelling and redness have resolved, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. in a solarium or by sunbathing) or extreme cold.
Are there any side-effects associated with Juvéderm?
Injection-related reactions such as swelling, redness and tenderness might occur. Other types of reactions are very rare, but about 1 in 2000 treated patients have experienced localized reactions thought to be of a hypersensitive nature. These have usually consisted of swelling or redness at the injection site, sometimes affecting the surrounding tissues.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is found throughout your body. It gives volume to the skin, lubricates the joints and gives the eyes their shape. The hylaluronic acid in Juvédermis stabilized for long duration and is not of animal or human origin.
How long do the results of Juvederm injection last?
It has been shown in clinical trials that Juvéderm is effective for up to six months, and in some cases up to 12 months, but individual results may vary.
Our practice offers Juvederm XC and Juvederm Voluma.
The goal of all dermal filler treatments is to correct facial wrinkles and fill hollows that occur as a result of aging, weight loss, scarring, or injury. Composite fillers are one attempt to solve a major shortcoming of dermal fillers: short-lived results. Most dermal fillers last about 4-6 months. In an attempt to increase the length of results, composite fillers combine a smooth carrier gel with tiny spheres of a durable material that is designed to increase the life of results. After injection, the gel is absorbed by the body, leaving the microspheres. As it absorbs the gel, the body fills in around the spheres with collagen, maintaining results as long as the spheres are in place. These fillers are good for nasolabial folds and deep hollows. Sometimes they are used for facial reshaping.
Radiesse in particular can smooth out deep wrinkles and lines around the nose and mouth. It can also add contours to areas of the face that have lost their shape due to sagging skin, such as the cheeks and jaw line. But what really sets Radiesse apart is that it stimulates the growth of new collagen, the protein in your skin that gives it a smooth texture and youthful elasticity. Radiesse is made up of synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite suspended in a gel. As the gel is absorbed by the body, it leaves the calcium hydroxylapatite behind. But your body’s natural collagen eventually fills in the space that the gel left behind.
Studies indicate that about 80% of people who get Radiesse injections see results that last for over 1 year.
